(( WHY WOULD YOU THINK THIS IS OKAY ))
“Jamie… I’m scared.” Sophie said, her voice wavering and tears welling up in her eyes. Jamie looked at his little sister and heard his heart pounding in his ears. He was scared too.
“It’s okay Soph. You’re gonna be fine.” he said, trying to keep his panic out of his voice. He tried to smile at her, his lips wavering as he tried not to cry. He quickly unwound his scarf from his neck, taking it in hand and giving Sophie another bright smile. “You know what? We’re gonna play a game, like you do with Abby. Okay?”
“Like with Abby?” Sophie said, confused.
“Yeah,” Jamie said, scooting forward on the ice. He flinched as the surface cracked under his weight, but he continued to inch forward for a few more feet. Almost there. “like with Abby. You know how you like to play tug-o-war?” Sophie nodded. “We’re gonna do that now!” Jamie leaned forward and tossed one end of his scarf towards his little sister, the fabric landing just within the little girl’s reach. “Pick it up, Soph!” Jamie said, and Sophie reached down and snatched up the scarf. She looked at her brother and froze when the ice gave another sickening crack. “Soph look at me, just look at me.” Jamie said as Sophie glanced down at the ice in panic. Slowly she looked up and met her brother’s wide eyes.
“Okay, now remember! If I manage to tug it away from you, you lose, so hold on tight, okay?” Jamie said, and Sophie nodded, a tremulous smile appearing on her face. Jamie swallowed, gripping the scarf tight.
“Okay Soph. One, two,” Jamie braced himself, digging his skates into the ice, “three!”
He pulled as hard as he could, Sophie letting out a little cry of surprise as she was yanked across the ice. The force of the pull rocketed Jamie forward, switching his position with his sister’s.
Jamie squeezed his eyes shut, and took a deep breath. “Jamie?” He opened his eyes and looked down with a relieved grin.
“We did it! Sophie, get back to shore, go get help!” Sophie grinned at him, her dirty hair swooshing about her face as she bobbed her head in a nod.
“Okay, Jamie, I’ll be right back-” Suddenly, the ice underneath Jamie’s skates gave another blood curdling groan. Jamie looked up at his sister.
“Sophie, go-” the boy never finished his sentence as the ice gave way underneath his feet, plunging the boy into freezing cold water. Jamie could hear Sophie’s screams but the cold was seeping through his body and into his bones. He could feel everything going dark…
Suddenly, he felt something under his arms. He was being pulled, dragged back to the surface. He broke the surface of the water with a gasp and a cough, trying to get the water out of his lungs.
“That was a close one, squirt.” A familiar voice said, and Jamie pried his eyes open, trying to blink his vision back to normal.
“…Jack?” He said, his voice weak. Jack Frost looked down and smiled at him, before pulling the boy closer to his chest.
“They really ought to put a warning sign on this lake, huh?” He said, but Jamie was too busy shivering to respond. The smile on Jack’s face faded and he got a serious look on his face. “You’re gonna be fine, Jamie. Come on. Let’s get you and Sophie home.”
